5 days – so many memories

People told me that KL was dangerous, they told me I’d get robbed, they told me I shouldn’t spend more time than needed in this city. I ended up staying 5 nights at the best hostel so far, met some of the coolest people so far and most definitely had the best time of my journey so far! I really fell in love with KL.It might’ve just been the people I hung out with that made my time there so special – but apart from that the city itself offers so much too: Chinatown with its cheap souvenirs and men and women chasing you to buy a pair of their – obviously not original – Nike shoes, central market with its hand made jewelry, clothes, bags and doctor fish, all the great food stalls and restaurants with authentic Chinese, Indian or Malay food, Bukit Bintang with all the way too expensive entrance fees for clubs and the cocktails that contain zero to no alcohol whatsoever (and still cost almost more than at home), Batu caves and the Thaipusam festival with all the interesting, astonishing and yet sometimes really scary rituals and happenings and of course the Petronas Twin Towers – the landmark of Kuala Lumpur – that look especially stunning at night when they’re all lit up and everybody gets in position in front of them to get a good shot to show their friends and family back home or to post it on Instagram (“let’s see how many likes I can get for traveling to the other side of the world”).

So thinking about all the things I just listed above makes me really happy. It brings back memories of nights at the rooftop bar at the travel hub, homemade bbq, guitar & singing sessions, late night food runs to Chinatown, party nights out at Bukit Bintang, dancing the night away and swimming in fancy pools with my friends from LA and Shane the great story teller. Excursions to Hindu festivals, looking at men putting hooks in their backs while being completely out of it in some kinda trance, waiting in the midday heat in a huge crowd of hundreds of thousands of sweating people to walk up 272 stairs to a cave where women pour out milk to worship the gods. All of that comes back to my head and makes me smile because I got to experience so many unique things, became friends with amazing people from all around the world and ended up feeling almost like a local knowing my way around a city 6673km away from home.
I’m not exactly sure but I think I liked it in KL, I think I liked it a whole lot.
