Good-byes never feel good but leaving Milwaukee and those fun days with Erik and his friends behind was especially hard. Luckily, we had a couple more stops waiting for us on our road trip. And thinking about spending two days all by ourselves in a remote cabin in the Ozark National Forest, with the next gas stop being an hour away, did get us a little excited to move on.

A Flashback to US Road Trip Adventures

A couple of weeks back, my iPhone memories showed me some pictures of beautiful nature, long and endless roads, orange pumpkins and a fairytale-like wedding in Texas. And it reminded me that our road trip through the US in 2018 had already been a year ago. Even longer than that! On 21 September 2018, we left Düsseldorf airport for London and final destination Chicago. To go on a 3-week adventure, to see new places, with lots of wonderful people to visit along the way, climaxing in the wedding of my best friend from high school. When I was looking at those pictures, it was hard to believe that those memories were made such a long time ago. A year has passed, many things have happened, changes came about, new cities became new homes. And still, it seems like we were driving down that road just yesterday.
First Stop: Chicago
Let’s skip the introduction of how where and when – this will follow in my next post – and get right to it: Chicago is such an amazing city and there couldn’t have been a better way to start our 3 weeks in the States.
After being up for more than 24 hours, we finally arrived at our hotel in the River North neighbourhood around 8pm on 21 September 2018. A friendly chatter with the reception staff and a quick look outside the window at night time Chicago later, we fell into our beds, exhausted but excited for the upcoming weeks. And the adventure should begin right the next morning – after a good night’s sleep in our big comfy hotel beds.
