The Budget

Argentina:

I lived in Buenos Aires for a total of 4 months and stayed in an Airbnb for most of the time, which cost me €300 per month. The below per-day costs exclude the costs of this accommodation in BA and therefore, only include food, costs of living, going out at night, public transportation, tickets for shows and festivals, as well as trips to the North of Argentina, Iguazú, Santiago de Chile, Mendoza and Uruguay.

Argentina – €28/day (living and travelling in Argentina for 4 months)

Brazil:

I couch-surfed the entire month in Brazil, and therefore, didn’t pay any money for accommodation, except for two nights in a Hostel on ILHA GRANDE. The below per-day costs include everything (except for my flights to Brazil) such as food, transportation by bus between cities, souvenirs, and entry fees.

Brazil – €29/day (travelled through the south of the country for 29 days)

Peru & Bolivia:

Since I worked at a Hostel in Cusco for four weeks and couch-surfed the rest of the time, I didn’t have to spend any money on accommodations. The below per-day costs include food, trips/tours, transportation, souvenirs, and entry fees.

Peru – €23/day (worked & travelled through Peru for 36 days)

Bolivia – €29/day (travelled through Bolivia for a total of 8 days)

Southeast Asia:

For those of you who would like to go on a backpacking trip but don’t how much money they need, I put together a little overview of the costs you should consider. Of course, those numbers vary from person to person but I think overall, my calculations should give you a good idea of how much money you need for such a trip.

My total budget for 3 months of backpacking through Southeast Asia – including flights, food, accommodation (hostels), shopping, transportation, tours, vaccinations, all kinds of equipment purchases, etc. –  was about €5.000. You can definitely cut some costs by booking all your flights at once, getting less vaccinations, or by staying away from all those nice massages and little treats along the way (which I would definitely NOT recommend, especially since they’re so cheap).

Also remember that once you have all the equipment, you don’t have to buy it again for your next trip. And since that applies for the vaccinations as well, your following journeys will be much cheaper and easier to prepare for, because you’re already done with most of the work. The below per-day costs include everything, except for my flights to and within Southeast Asia.

Southeast Asia – €34/day (travelled for a total of 3 months through Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam and Bali)
