The Vaccinations

The countries I visited in Southeast Asia and South America didn’t have any mandatory vaccination regulations, but I got vaccinated against the following diseases, based on suggestions of my doctor. Recommended vaccinations can be found on the website of the Department for Foreign Affairs of your country.

  • Cholera – no shots (pills or powder to dissolve in water); can be done by yourself at home
  • Hepatitis A – 2 shots within 4 months (last shot a couple of weeks before my departure)
  • Influenza – one shot (right before my departure)
  • Pneumococcal disease – 1 shot (3 months before the trip)
  • Rabies – 3 shots within one month (3 months before the trip)
–> highly recommended, as there are so many stray dogs (in Asia, as well as South America)
  • Typhus – no shots (pills or powder to dissolve in water); can be done by yourself at home

Acting on the advice of my doctor, I did not get vaccinated against Yellow Fever, as the side effects of the vaccinations might be severe and chances of getting and infection that can’t easily be treated are rather small. This is just my personal approach though, and you should seek advice from your doctor.
