Hyères & Île de Porquerolles – The Perfect Island Vibe Get-Away

IMG_6676

Looking for crystal clear water, empty beaches, and a calm place where one can only walk or cycle around? Then Ile de Porquerolles is most definitely the right address. Visiting for a day at the end of September, we had the island almost to ourselves, exploring the viewpoint at the north-eastern tip by bike, resting on Plage de Notre Dame, listening to the waves while the only other people were a good 10-minute walk further down the shore. If it wouldn’t have been for the last ferry at 6:20pm back to the mainland, we would’ve probably forgotten all about the time and stayed here forever.

Provence Verte and the Grand Canyon of Europe

After having explored the Natural Parks of the Camargue, Alpilles, and Luberon, we continued our trip east to the Provence Verte, with the ultimate destination being the Gorge du Verdon – also known as the Grand Canyon of Europe. And the name certainly didn’t promise too much! Without wanting to spoil anything, I’d like to note here that the Gorge du Verdon is probably the most impressive piece of nature I’ve ever seen in Europe so far. After having seen the valley from the winding roads above, hiking through it was an incredible experience that left us in awe. Ever changing scenery, one viewpoint even more impressive than the other – there are really no words to describe this stunning place. Go and see for yourself!

Love is in the Air

Good-byes never feel good but leaving Milwaukee and those fun days with Erik and his friends behind was especially hard. Luckily, we had a couple more stops waiting for us on our road trip. And thinking about spending two days all by ourselves in a remote cabin in the Ozark National Forest, with the next gas stop being an hour away, did get us a little excited to move on.

A Flashback to US Road Trip Adventures

A couple of weeks back, my iPhone memories showed me some pictures of beautiful nature, long and endless roads, orange pumpkins and a fairytale-like wedding in Texas. And it reminded me that our road trip through the US in 2018 had already been a year ago. Even longer than that! On 21 September 2018, we left Düsseldorf airport for London and final destination Chicago. To go on a 3-week adventure, to see new places, with lots of wonderful people to visit along the way, climaxing in the wedding of my best friend from high school. When I was looking at those pictures, it was hard to believe that those memories were made such a long time ago. A year has passed, many things have happened, changes came about, new cities became new homes. And still, it seems like we were driving down that road just yesterday.

First Stop: Chicago

Let’s skip the introduction of how where and when – this will follow in my next post – and get right to it: Chicago is such an amazing city and there couldn’t have been a better way to start our 3 weeks in the States.

After being up for more than 24 hours, we finally arrived at our hotel in the River North neighbourhood around 8pm on 21 September 2018. A friendly chatter with the reception staff and a quick look outside the window at night time Chicago later, we fell into our beds, exhausted but excited for the upcoming weeks. And the adventure should begin right the next morning – after a good night’s sleep in our big comfy hotel beds.

On Bali? Everything Easy!

With winter temperatures creeping up on us and Christmas – with all its hustling and gift-shopping – just around the corner, who wouldn’t want to escape onto the island and into the sun for just a little while. For my mom and I, this opportunity presented itself when my host sister from my high school exchange in Texas announced her wedding to take place on Bali. Not thinking twice about the 16-hour-long trip from Frankfurt to Denpasar, we booked our tickets via Singapore and found ourselves swimming in the ocean and wearing flip-flops in 30 degrees Celsius in mid-November.

Tunisia – Speaking of Underrated Places to Visit

Having no expectations about Tunisia whatsoever, we were blown away by the beauty, friendliness and diversity of this country. Welcomed everywhere we went, amazed by the landscapes during our road trip to the south, we did not only fall in love with our constant companions, the camels. Now we are looking back at 8 wonderful days in Tunis, on the road, discovering oases in the middle of the desert, eating couscous and ‘Harissa’ (the typical Tunisian hot sauce, to be eaten with anything, at any time), riding camels, watching (and smelling) them enjoy their food numerous times, spending the night under the bare stars in the Sahara, and eating fresh bread that’s been baked in the sand of the desert by our Beduin guide. Speaking of underestimated and misjudged countries, Tunisia should be on the very top of that list.

Patagonia – the Marvellous South of Argentina

In Patagonia, nature sure is presenting itself from its most beautiful and stunning side. Where snow-covered mountain tops stick out from behind endless grasslands, where winding rivers cut through marvellous rock formations, and where the air is so fresh and cold from the snow, while the mild summer breeze warms up your sunlit face. And all you can think is “Gosh, this is so beautiful, I don’t ever want to leave”. And so you stay – enjoying the Patagonian hospitality, daily hikes to lagoons, waterfalls and on top of hills, grilled lamb for dinner, breathtaking views and an occasional whiskey on a glacier.

If any of those points arouse your interest, the south of Argentina might just be the next travel destination for you. Whether you’re an advanced mountain climber, a weekend-hobby-hiker, or simply an ambitious photo-taker with the will to persevere, the countless trails and tours in El Calafate and El Chaltén offer something for just about everyone.

Un Café con Leche, por favor

For all the brunch and coffee lovers like me out there, coming to Buenos Aires will most definitely fulfil your caffeine and sweet-tooth needs. A basic café con leche can be found every 50m, but even if you’re in for a more advanced breakfast, brunch, frappuchino, cake or high tea, you won’t have to look for long. Palermo offers just as many cafes and breakfast places as bars and clubs, and we made it our personal mission to discover each and every single one of them, in order to find our favourites and return as many times as possible. Yes, we did have a brunch almost every Sunday for the past 3 months – do not judge us… in the end, no job’s too hard to be of service to my dear blog readers.

Iguazú vs. Iguaçu – The Majestic Falls in Argentina and Brazil

One of the largest waterfall systems in the world, and probably also one of the most impressive ones, visiting the Iguazú Falls is an incredible and unforgettable experience. Seeing those ridiculous amounts of water gushing down into the depth of the waterfalls is something truly overwhelming, and the beauty of the panoramic view over the more than 20 falls is unequaled. Although some might have their preference for either of the two sides, in my opinion, each one has its own perks, and both of them are definitely worth visiting.
