1,5 Weeks in Yucatán: A Marvelous Road Trip from Cancún to Campeche

Having been to Mexico before, I was already a fan of the country and its warm-hearted people. But this road trip? It truly reaffirmed this first impression, and more. The people of the Yukatán peninsula are some of the kindest and most welcoming souls you’ll ever meet. With the wonderful wedding of my American exchange sister in Mérida as our grand finale, we mapped out a 1.5-week itinerary in May, road-tripping from Cancún to Mérida via Valladolid, then down to Campeche, and looping back through one of Mexico’s “Magical Towns”, Izamal. Picture 38°C heat, rainbow-colored streets in every town, and frequent dips into Cenotes to keep us cool. Just writing about it already makes me want to do the trip all over again.

Arles & the Camargue

Driving over the highway bridge, with Arles appearing in front of you, the view of the city may remind you of a setting from Game of Thrones with countless ancient buildings and Romanesque architecture emerging from the accumulation of white facades of the houses. Being the capital of the Camargue, the city is the perfect base to explore the surrounding wetlands with its wild Camargue horses and flamingos.

But before venturing out, you should take some time to explore the city itself and admire its picturesque streets lined with flowers and plants in front of the colourful doors of the pretty houses with their blue shutters. I promise you, you won’t get tired of the views of its cute little streets, and the Colosseum-like arena might just leave you stunned.
